I think Al Qaeda is sort of meaningless at this point. This a regional tribal civil war where everyone is jocking for territory.

The Kurds will use this opportunity to secure their territory and secession. They took Kirkuk today and they have wanted that forever. That is a trillion dollar capture.

They can also use the fleeing Shia to bolster their army and economy i.e. put them to work in the newly captured oil fields of Kirkuk. Use the money and manpower to work for more Kurdish territory in Iraq and other adjacent countries like turkey and Iran.

Get the Shia to help them as the price for their protection from the invading Sunni.

Iraq is going to split into three countries along tribal lines. Syria will probably do the same.

The tribal and ideological complexities of this civil war defy understanding by a mortal person.
