That is a moot argument. anyone can teach the gifted and talented cheaply.

Why not look at Texas high school graduation statistics.

The goal is to teach the 90% of the kids who are not gifted and talented.

University tuition is so high because we are not funding the universities adequately and the same hold for public schools. I have to send money constantly for my kids public school.

The best thing for the individual and society is sound free public schools for all kids between 3 and to when they complete 18 years minimum and ideally 21 years. The human mind grows greatly if it gets this much education.

And the more educated the individual the more civilized the society.

And control the schools at the local and state level, but make them public. Most teachers are good teachers and there is no viable way to separate the good from bad teacher. It is too subjective. The reason is because I am sure you and I would differ completely on who is good and who is bad, so the only answer is local control which ensures randomization of academic philosophies and it works fine.

I went to school in California when universities were almost free and the teachers by and large were just fine. I never saw a single friend hurt by bad teachers and most of my friends got very good educations.

The bad teacher nonsense is the rich saying that so they do not have to pay taxes to support public schools. They hate that.

You probably think liberal teachers are bad and I think conservative teachers are bad, so neither of us should be able to decide. Let each school principle hire whom they want overseen by a local democratically elected school board.

Hi koan; Re: "The schools are only failing because of lack of money."; Chicago high schools spend $7587 per student as of 2013. See their website for the details: cps.edu

If a typical class size is 15 students, that means they spend $190,000 per classroom each year.

The #1 rated (by USNews and World Report) high school in the country is in Dallas, Texas (a state run by people who hate minorities and education, according to your blinkered view LOL). It's called the School for the Talented and Gifted. It is 58% minority:
usnews.com

This famous magnet school, the absolute best in the nation, spends $5747 per student.
