The army in Syria know their lives and their families' lives hang in the balance.

In Iraq, most the army has always been, and still is, Sunni. What's more, the army outside the Republican Guard has always been, and obviously still is, a patronage racket for the Sunni tribesmen to buy their behavior. Maliki has shit all over the Sunnis now for years and what should they die for?

The only forces that put up a fight when we invaded were the Republican Guard. They fought because, like in Syria, they were dirty up to the neck and had a lot to lose.

We tried to beat the corruption out of the army. A friend of mine was one of the trainers. I know we tried to beat it out of them. We failed.
