Because without wide-spread democracy, brutal individuals in the middle east can rise to power and create self-serving dictatorships. These are not men of God. They can self-identify as Islamic believers all they want but they still are not men of God.

They are no different from the many brutal African dictators who end up slaughtering and subjegating entire countries. Most of these individuals don't even profess to have a religious faith.

All religions are man-made constructs. Any particular one may or may not reflect the mind of God. Or it might reflect parts of the mind of God and parts of what the founders themselves deemed important. Also religions evolve over time as different leaders add to or subtract from pieces of the original philosphical construct.

Unfortunately, people often read about things like the Inquisition, conflicts during the Protestant Reformation, or a scandal involving a church leader and take that as evidence against the existence of God. I view this as a logical fallacy. It would be like leaving the lens cap on a camera while taking pictures of the beach. Then getting home and finding your pictures were either blurred or non-existent and deciding the ocean wasn't there.
