This is hardly worth much back and forth. It's one thing for me to assert Wolfowitz was not dumb. He happened to be a sometime lunch partner of mine in a time far away because he was in the same academic department as one of my very best friends at the time. Very smart guy. However, it's another to make some sort of claim about the "dumbness" of a policy. I don't disagree about the "dumbness" of the entire Iraq episode. Smart people of a variety of political convictions (I can name a few liberals) do dumb things policy wise.

The Obama administration's continued support for charter schools in the face of the growing evidence that, in the aggregate, they are no better than comparable public schools and that funding them undermines public school funding, all of which heads us ever more into lack of schooling for the poor. That's dumb. By almost any measure. But some very smart folk favor it.

As for religion, I've stayed away from that discussion because, as far as I'm concerned, it's terribly complicated. It requires a longish post which I'm not ready to do now.

My only simple comment is the confessional one--we all confess to our beliefs about the meaning of our short little span among the living--and respect the confessions of others. And resist all temptations to insist that others believe as we do.
