I don't think you can ignore that these were also men of faith. Bush, for all his empty idiocy, is deeply religious- and he probably thought God really was talking to him, and telling him to go to the ME. God speaks to lots of delusional people. Interestingly, he doesn't seem as chatty with the Nobel laureates. Go figure.
