That was a fascinating article, thanks. Reminds me of a story told by a friend who was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. They were all seated in HQ for a big meeting and the Captain calls for volunteers to fly a couple dangerous missions. All the young guys, fresh in country, raise their hands, eager to serve. Way back in the back, were the old guys, the more experienced pilots who had been in the Army a good while, and in Vietnam for a year or two. They sat back. None of them volunteered. This young guy (he's now 67) recalls wondering "What's wrong with them, why aren't they stepping forward on this?" He said he later realized it was because they were not ignorant, they had perspective. And it wasn't long before he became one of the old guys, sitting in the back.
