For the Ice Man -- I personally see no need to defend oneself from every critical post. Just skip it and move on.

I agree strongly with bw. Being a former editor and writer, I know how hard it is to convey to a reader the meaning of ones thought. As you say, the inflections in speech that we use to convey our thoughts are not available in the written word. It is often that the reader will surmise a totally different interpretation than what was intended by the writer. I know not if that was the case here, but it is a fundamental problem in writing -- especially writing in a casual manner by non-professional writers such as we.

(Damn, I am waxing eloquent this day.)

Here is an idea...just for fun this slow weekend...how about ALL you lurkers out there sign in and post just one message so we can get a feel for how many folks exist "in the shadows".
