There was no lack of opposition in the 70s. There was a lot of opposition to Roe and the ideas behind it, going back even earlier then the 70s, before the actual decision was made. Maybe not as organized but that's a different point.

As for racism it was more prevalent in the 70s then the 80s and later, and more prevalent still pre-70s.

In fact even the article you link to shows evidence that goes against its own conclusion. Racism wouldn't couldn't and didn't rally the voters to the cause. Roe (and other cultural/religious/moral issues) did.
