As far as letting Iran have nukes, do you know that Iran made overtures to Bush just before the Iraq war and he blew them off?

That was probably the BEST chance we've had or will have regarding Iran's nuclear program and Bush ignored it.


I don't which particular "overture" you're referring to, but in all cases during the Bush administration it was way, far more complicated than you suggest.

In general, the EU3 couldn't get its shit together and in '03-'04 Powell was working with them against the Bush administration, effectively supporting John Kerry's position on Iran during the runup to the election. It essentially tied Bush's hands during that period.

You really can't undertake this sort of negotiations from a position of weakness (see: Ronald Reagan ending the Cold War, single-handedly). Iran saying, "We want to make a deal," is probably the worst possible time to move forward with a deal.
