On the day of the all time low the short position was 1 million shares.
And, just for example, how do you know, how can anyone know, that those one million shares did not include the 600K+ plus that turned out to be fully hedged and just disappeared from the short interest last month?

The biggest flaw in your thinking is treating the shorts as a collective. The reality is shorts probably sell to other shorts and take over their short positions all the time. I suspect that if there were any way to tell, we would find that less than 10% of the short positions that existed at the low are still open today. And most of those are probably short from 2007-8 at prices much higher than the stock trades for today.
