Oh, the coal industry isn't anywhere even close to being "dismantled" as you claimed....

Coal is not even slated to fall (as a percentage of our national energy mix) for many decades to come. At *worst* it's use may somewhat level off at the current high level as older plants are retired. Hardly 'Apocalyptic'.

And (as far as your reference to 'the patent office') I can only assume that you are referring to the decision on the federal trademark registration of the Washington Redskins.

[Now I for one have LONG supported massive change and reform of our patent system (far too many patent trolls, ridiculous patent extensions in pharmaceuticals for silly reasons like merely changing the color of a pill, etc., buying off generic competition should be illegal, 'process' patents in software should be reined in... our patent system could do so much more to contribute to the growth of our economy and to intellectual advancement in science and technology, but it has become too 'captive' to vested old money interests and lost sight of the public's interests).]

However, back to what I think you were referring to, the 'Redskins'... isn't it true that the patent and trademark office has ruled that same way a couple of times BEFORE (over the last 20 years or so...), and isn't it true that they are somewhat hemmed-in by the exact LANGUAGE of the governing federal law which PROHIBITS the granting of federal trademarks which are "offensive or disparaging language"?

If you don't like the law then change it. (But be prepared for the 'floodgates' to open if 'offensive or disparaging language' becomes trademarkable.....)
