"if the Dems could take the House and get things, he would get back over 50%."

I agree.

But that isn't going to happen this year... and I don't think the Dems will take control of the House (although pretty sure they will take the Senate in a big way) even in 2016... and that's because of the way House districts have become gerrymandered all over this nation.

With Senate and Presidential elections one can't gerrymander the voting population --- because whole States are the political units. But the House is gerried-all-to-Hell.

I don't think there will be a realistic chance to undo that until the elections AFTER 2020 (which is the next national census, the results of which are the basis for redrawing House and local districts every decade).

"Can't be many times in history when a president was 6 times as poplar as Congress."

That's an interesting way to look at it! (But also I would think that it is pretty NORMAL for the second term of a President to see substantial 'fatigue' set in, and a slide in approval ratings. So... that is a 'falling tide' that has to be fought against). All-in-all though, President Obama seems to have a pretty solid 'core' level of support... although I would *also* opine that the MAIN FACTOR which governs his public approval levels remains - just as it was when he was first elected - 'the Economy, Economy, Economy'.

But, as you observed, THIS is also interesting to note:
