Your data problem lies in this modification of the data analysis back in 2008, moving older temps down. Funny, I doubt they had as many sea surface measurement last century. So so statisticians decided to somehow create them. Therefore changing the averages...

If you care to study the study you will see the wider patch of negative correlations where somehow they pull a rabbit out of their hat dragging down global averages by adding in more negative data points.
