I was surprised to read today that IBM has replaced its AIX-based hardware that was previously used for newsgroup handling on its ISP service with Intel-based hardware running NT 4.0. The NT servers, according to a purported IBM employee who claims to administer them, "have proven themselves to be more stable" than the AIX systems they replaced, and the hardware is much cheaper. This, it seems to me, has mixed connotations. It may signal that IBM is fading from the Unix market, which could be very bullish for Sun. OTOH, it may be a feather in Microsoft's cap.

Interestingly, the revelation occurred amidst a flurry of complaints about the level of news service as perceived by IBM's ISP customers (of which I am one). I stumbled upon the admission in ibmnet.admin.news in a thread entitled News Servers while trying myself to determine what had happened. (I think that might be a private newsgroup for users of ibm.net only, so you might not be able to access it.) I will tell you that MY perception is service took a turn for the worse at about the time of the switch, despite IBM's assertions.

JMHO. Not intended as investment advice. I can't ensure the veracity of the information presented (I read it on the Internet for gosh sakes!), but I have no reason to believe it is unreliable.
