The Lord told the Israelites to teach the Scriptures to their children, to wear them as a sign on their foreheads, and to write them on the doorposts of their homes. It was God's way of reminding them to keep Scripture close and accessible. Some turned this into a ritual and began wearing phylacteries, little leather boxes containing a verse from the Law. It's all right to have verses at our fingertips, and there are great ways to display our love for Scripture. But remember, the best place for the Word of God is in our hearts and minds. It's not about a ritual but a relationship. If we understood what happens when we use the Word of God, we would use it oftener.
