Maybe it was just a realization that he spent all his time trading, and in the end found that he had not spent any time on the other aspects of his life. Did he have friends? Did his life have a purpose? Is net worth all there is to life? Is there hope? I don't think penniless is the root cause. Certainly being penniless when you spend all you time trying to accumulate wealth must feel a waste. This deals with the past, not the future. Future is based on hope.
