Um, you do realize she was in classes by September of 1961. In Washington state. Bribing people in Hawaii wouldn't have helped.

Ann was a student. Barrack Senior was a student. And a foreign student at that. So he couldn't work. While it might be different today, in 1961 undergrads weren't known to be a wealthy demographic.

As to her parents, even if they were well off, do you think that they'd pay that kind of money so that a daughter, whose marriage was strongly opposed by both the bride's family and the groom's, to fly to a third world country when very pregnant to give birth? That makes no sense at all.
