I don't see how any of that kills competition. Granted, some insurance companies declined to participate. But at least several have changed their minds and want to be in the exchanges for next year.

Some of the bigger players staying out was a blessing for some of the smaller companies. The one I signed with, Molina Healthcare, used it as an opportunity to expand into Texas. So there is one case that I am familiar with where it created more competition. I make too much for subsidies. But my present plan is a lot cheaper than my previous one with roughly the same coverage. Less total out of pocket, though.
