Yeah, I know. In general, bombing civilians is a very non-productive and indefensible activity.

Japan was a difficult situation. Considering the brutal manner in which their military operated, when Nazis were sickened by their brutality you know they were pretty extreme, there wasn't a lot of sympathy for them. Then when we got wind that Japan was negotiating surrendering to the Soviets, that put a great deal of urgency on their unconditional surrender to the US.

The idea that if you are brutal enough your opponents will just give up is a very common attitude. It also almost never works. What usually happens is that your opponents fight even harder and don't pay as much attention to the niceties.
