I'm trying to remember, for the life of me I can't... Olivia Newton John's melody to Physical was either a blatant steal or visa versa from another song. I used to combine the two and sing them... it'll come to me.

There are only so many melody lines you can construct in 12 equal, as Ivor Darreg counseled me.

Now lets say you take a melody like Louie Louie and translate it into 11 equal. Its a toss up whether the intervalic distances between the 11 and 12 tone are close enough to constitute plagarism. The question that would be put before a jury is how close do cent values have to be to constitute the same interval, particularly when the system you are using has a different number of intervals between the octave.

One would have to have a jury of acoustical physicists to even understand the argument. That's what the blues is all about, hitting the notes between the keys, so a master like Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Gun Club) might be able to get away singing physical...

Back to what constitutes good music... Sun Ra used to win the Synthesizer and Big Band categories in the Downbeat Critics polls regularly... like for a couple of decades.

never in the listener polls.
