Your and jp's conversation last night was great-I wish you all wouldn't apologise. And I think your whole point about empowerment and ultimate responsibility can be expanded into every area of life. Not only does the concept apply to controlling negative actions but for taking positive ones. In my opinion, the reason entitlement programs don't work is that they remove that motivation, that empowerment, especially because of their open-ended nature. Of course, then we get into the areas of whether people really have choices or options anymore at that level or have become so beaten down that they no longer have the ability to feel personal control.
I am more concerned at this point about my own children's ability to make respnsible decisions, particular in the areas of alcohol, drugs, and sex. CW asked us the other night why drinking one beer would be wrong.
I'd be curious about how you all would respond to this---from the legal aspect? the driving aspect? the loss of control? moral issues?
Dan and I had slightly differing ideas so I'd really love to hear your thoughts-or even your teen experiences should you be so inclined.
You can intersperse remarks about possums if it makes you feel better.
