Taxes for low and middle-income households should decrease further by 2017, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Wednesday in an interview.

France's budget bill for 2015 plans tax cuts for around 3.7 million French taxpayers, "but we must go further by 2017," Mr. Valls is quoted as saying in French business daily Les Echos.

"Overall, taxes should drop for low income and middle-class households," he said, without elaborating.

A policy introduced two years ago by President Francois Hollande to raise taxes on incomes and corporations in an attempt to curb deficits and to finance spending has backfired, by failing to tackle rising unemployment while fueling public discontent.

Mr. Hollande earlier this year amended his strategy and the government, with new premier Mr. Valls, has pledged 50 billion euros ($68.35 billion) of spending cuts as well as corporate tax-rebate schemes to boost French companies' competitiveness. It has also pledged to cut income taxes, starting from next year.

Cutting income tax is a necessary step to rekindle households' confidence, Mr. Valls said.

"We will be firm on the EUR50 billion savings plan . It's difficult but it's a strong signal which contributes to restore confidence because these savings give credit to our tax and charges cuts. I won't drop this," he said.
