Re: "If you got a bill for $50 for a single q-tip, it was a mistake that should have been called to the hospital's attention"

Of course it was a 'mistake' (along with a couple of dozen others... mysteriously ALL BEING IN THEIR FAVOR, and totaling tens of thousands of dollars of 'mistakes'... such as double billings for procedures that I only had once, as well as the almost insignificant '$50 cotton swabs', etc. :-)

Only they did not admit to any 'mistakes' until *after* several dozen itemized certified letters moving back and forth, over a period of about a year and a half... and specifically not until I threatened to sue and make a big public splash over their fraudulent billing practices. THEN and only then did they suddenly listen to me and agree with each particular on my initial list of errors.

(A few years after my experience with them the ownership group of this large metropolitan hospital crashed and burned in a mass of state and federal charges... and, fortunately, is under new management now and I have never found any fraud in their billings since. Knock wood....)
