I think you might have missed his point - he's speaking to the fact that repurposing of content is neither new or unusual – and yet it seems to drive a great deal of what is considered mainstream and "popular". Over and over things are recycled. Star Wars is mostly homage/borrowed from the mass market serials of the 40s which were taken from even earlier low-brow novels and comicbooks.

There's no question that there is better art out there that remain largely unrecognized.

I just wish there was a little more "steal" and less "borrow".
