Its just a habit of mind. Others need to be reminded that it actually feels uplifting to be generous and these opportunities for giving are just that opportunities, one can always decline if one feels the recipient is not "deserving". Why should you feel like a bad person if you have the sense of being scammed? FWIW, it still feels uplifting to some to be generous even if the recipient isn't clearly deserving at the time.
