They pledged their all, including their wealth, to support the Declaration of Independence, and by inference, the Revolutionary War that was the inevitable result of that declaration. They pledged their all in their quest and fight for FREEDOM. They most certainly didn't "pledge their fortunes" to provide for the cancerous growth of big brother and the nanny state, which aptly describes our current state of the union.
