There are a lot of idiots in the world, and many of them live in the United States. That's all the explanation you need. Most people don't mind hurting other people as long as they don't have to do it personally. If all they have to do is look the other way, lots of people are perfectly capable of doing that- and that's true everywhere. It's not like it's just Americans. We do tend to have a religious element to our looking the other way- and plenty of religious institutions were happy to support the idea that the black race was inferior (and look! The bible says so!). The racism in the south as all too human, just like the Naiz persecution of the Jews was all too human. It can happen anywhere. Don't think of it as sub-human- it's human. That's what humans are.
