If "we mutually pledge to each other our fortunes" isn't about taxes what the hell do you think it's about?

"We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

This means they were putting everything on the line for the new country. From the British point of view, signing this Declaration was an act of treason. The Signers stood to lose their lives, all their property (fortunes), and, if they broke the faith with each other after signing this Declaration, their sacred honor. They had a lot to lose.

Some of the 56 Signers did lose the lives they pledged. Some of them lost all their property (fortunes). Some lost their families. I don't know of any who lost their honor.
