Decided to start/learn aquaponics......

fish pee in the water and this creates nitrogen which is then pumped through grow beds....

raising talapia to feed us and as they are prolific breeders....to feed channel cats in another tank.
using an old deep freeze for the talapia and a 300+ gallon "pond" to hold the cats.

grow beds will be cement mixing troughs filled with "lucky stones" and topped off with stiff insulating sheets with holes cut for the roots/stems to reach the water.

need either a led solar type light to direct sun light through basement window or typical grow lights.

always need to size fish to grow beds so this will be an experiment I expect to be stressful.

need solar back up to run pumps and heater.........

but if it works.....we eat very well all year round even when there may be feet of snow on the ground and no electricity.

no more pink cardboard tomatoes

just starting to get all the info/concepts/ideas together and expect to be close to set up by fall.

if it works I'll keep you posted.

if not.....

I'd rather not think about that.
