very hard to compare players of different times....

if forced to answer... i think pele is. i saw things done by him particularly in 1958 and 1970 that were simply incredible.... in the same vein.... roberto carlos, ronaldihno... johan cruyff ... maradona.... alfredo distefano... and so on..... btw... in the WC in chile 1962 pele was taken out with an injury, brasil still won the cup, and then in england (1966) he was also taken out with injuries, and brasil was eliminated very early.

i suppose you are looking for someone as a 'complete' player... most of the guys above were strikers
but there are many other players who 'feed' the strikers and set up plays for them to score.... and in their own right they are great players themselves..... didi, vava, tostao, jeraldihno, and so on... mostly.... members of the 1970 brasil team... (but there are many others... including goalies)

so for me it is hard to say... 'x' is the best player...... i think that the super stars is ONE single category in which certain players excel... but part of what makes a super player is who is surrounded with....

taking an extreme example.... christiano ronaldo may be a super crack (see real madrid) but when he plays with portugal.... he simply does not have the support from the other players like when he plays with RM

the same could be said of lionel messi.... the other players from barsa (barcelona) are doing a great support effort for him to be the star he is..... i think argentina (the team) has done a much better job than portugal in this comparison..... but i am not convinced argentina can beat the dutch.... ESPECIALLY if you have a blind referee who will EAT robben's diving performances and gets a penalty as he did in the game with mexico.

so.... i do not think of a single player as "the best" i see more the team support that makes a specific player..... as for teams....... single teams.... i would say i am a fan of barcelona above many other great teams.... i realize that is a very different category.....

a disclosure.... it is been so long that i actually followed futbol on a daily basis that i may be missing lots of other players as well.... these days i mostly follow the world cup..... so i have 4 more games and then i go into futbol hibernation..... -g

btw.... clarification of the F-1 new rules.... it is 100 KILOS (as opposed to liters) that is the limiting factor in other words.... there may be at certain point during a race where the driver won't be able to take the car anywhere near its limit..... (which is basically the purpose of a competition.... particularly one that it is not an endurance race)

here is more info on the new rules: (video)
