85% of the water systems (or people served by them) in the US, isn't "the vast majority of water systems". The US only has about 4 and a half percent of the world's population.

Water has been privatized, or semi-privatized, or always private, in the UK. 65 cities in Brazil are server by water concessions. Urban areas in general in Chile are served by private sources. Prague, Budapest, Berlin, Riyadh, Jakarta, Sofia, Manilla, and many other cities are totally or partially served by private or semi-private solutions.

Even in the US - "Private water companies safeguard public health, promote environmental stewardship and deliver sustainable solutions in more than 40 countries. In the United States alone, these reliable water and wastewater service providers support the needs of nearly 73 million people every day. That's almost one quarter of our nation's population."
