I am still trying to figure out all this hype over what was supposed to be the "strongest" El Nino since 1998. news.yahoo.com I don't get it. Queue Chris Farley...if we can re-create a "gold-standard" past using "statistical methods" coupled with "gold-standard" models and a "gold-standard" understanding of CO2's impact, then what is the problem? Sometimes, just looking something different such as the lunar declination might provide a clue. But somehow knowing and finding the truth is not the motive behind the "fear mongering" media. nz.news.yahoo.com And internally, when the PDO flipped to its negative phase in 2008, there have been shorter El Nino's and longer La Nina's. The La Nina phase decreases tropical baroclinicity (fuel for storms crossing the Pacific), which (cause-and-effect I won't go into) leads to an enhanced ridge over the west coast of the United States and enhanced trough over the eastern US.
