Rob,

Some excellent points. I'd like to comment on another aspect which, traditionally has been a lagger and something that has been sorely lacking, where new technologies are involved. I'm referring to the field of central office and field test equipment: Hand held units that craftspeople use to install and troubleshoot lines.

At the current time technicians are left to deal with traditional wideband test sets which were designed for the cable tv environment [mainly coax], and on other conventional volt-ohm and power [db] measuring devices. T-1 and T-3/SONET/ATM devices are for the most part useless in diagnosing or characterizing DSL lines. Most of the transmission impairment measuring sets (TIMS) are designed to handle circuits with a cut off of 4 kHz. And the higher frequency test sets are not parameterized (sp?) to deal with the performance specifications of xDSL, to the best of my knowledge. Companies like Fluke, Scope Communications and Microtest who are making their millions in hand held Category 5 test sets -- which are used for in-building premises cabling systems -- are probably fast at work in this area.

Do you, or anyone else here, have any information on what companies are currently shipping or planning to ship test equipment for xDSL loops?

TIA, and Regards, Frank
