Inode,
What exactly does the history of discrimination have to do with blacks killing each other on the streets? Few 20 year old blacks have experience discrimination other than what they brought on themselves by acting like heathens, same as some 20 year old whites do.
I can answer that.

The history of discrimination is an unfortunate tale of self-fulfilling prophecies. You depress a racial minority for generations, claiming that they will never amount to anything. Then when the "prophesy" is self-fulfilled, you pat yourself on the back for being "right."

IMO these young black people bring it upon themselves because their "reality" tells them that they will never amount to more than hoodlums or welfare queens. Sure, we have an entire society trying to tell them the exact opposite, from public schools to community leaders (including Obama himself), but that will never make up for the world they live in, which was created over many centuries of getting a raw deal.

Hence I agree with Ted that we shouldn't ignore history. However, I don't support Ted using that history in order to justify his extreme white guilt. To me, what he's doing is counter-productive and will probably do more harm than a run-of-the-mill bigot could do.
