LeBron James is going home.

The once-in-a-generation basketball player left Cleveland for Miami in 2010 in search of championship success with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and found it twice over.

Along the way, he captured the imagination of South Florida and turned a longtime football town searching for a winner into a hoops heaven. Now he’s returning to the team where he started his career, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the nearby town he calls home, Akron, Ohio.

With the entire NBA waiting for him to make his free-agency decision, James broke the news on Friday in an essay for SI.com as told to writer Lee Jenkins.

“I am shocked & disappointed in today's news,” Heat owner Micky Arison said on Twitter. “However I will never forget what LeBron brought us for 4 years. Thanks for memories @KingJames.”

The Heat will now begin scrambling to piece together its roster, beginning with attempting to resign Bosh, who could become the team's focal point along with Wade
