<<Has anyone been successful accessing the net via @HOME from a private/home local area network (using a proxy server)? If so, any comments?>>

I might not understand your question correctly, but I think you're looking to connect one network (your local LAN) to another network (the Internet). That calls for a router, and I have heard that @Home is no different from other Internet connections, meaning it's relatively straightforward to get a router going.

At home, no pun intended, I use a sad, tired old 486 running Linux to connect to my 2 Macs and 2 PCs. Linux runs IP masquerading, making all the individual IP addresses on my own network run through one dynamic IP address (meaning I have one account with my ISP).

I haven't done it with a cable modem, but the same setup should work with one.
