business models are generally overlaid/embedded onto/within a system...they have utility for as long as that utility produces the desired yield. (positive or negative)

once the yield drops below any threshold ,its utility is used up, a new model replaces the old, in some cases, the system itself can be replaced, but usually after many iterated models have come and gone.
