I had Win 8 on my laptop. It was pretty clear that the UI was optimized for touch. Moving the mouse from one side of the screen to another caused bunches of windows to pop up and close.

I hated it.

They even put the same UI on their server Win 8. How stupid was that? They have been losing market share in that space for a while because they don't have a command line version.

They wanted the same software everywhere. And eventually restrict software distribution to the Windows store. I guess they figured they could pull that off because Apple gets away with it. Completely ignoring the fact there are people like me who don't own any Apple products because of that.

I can't avoid Apple, though. The Ruby on Rails community has gone to Apple in a big way. Linux is an option, but better to adopt a standard platform.

Have you seen Halt and Catch Fire? They are a little sloppy on the technical end of things and it drifted there for a couple of episodes, but they are laying the groundwork for a fascinating alternate world for PCs...
