Apple pioneered the $200 price point for a smartphone. I think they want to have an offering there. it's just simpler not to have to deal with a price hike backlash. Like MGV says, they have a lot of margin on the iPhone to play with anyway.

But, it's essentially a price hike if they move the 5C to free subsidized ($450), then sell the 4.7" 6 at $200 subsidized ($650) and the 5.5" 6 at $300 subsidized ($750). Maybe abandon the $100 subsidized price point altogether.
