| | | True, I think you could find similar examples in anyone's life over 40 years. As for his business partners, I wouldn't be so blunt with mine but bluntness is not necessarily a bad thing.
I think the main thing that impresses me is more than almost* anyone I can think of who was that rich and powerful, Jobs' primary motivation wasn't money. God help us with our devices had he not insisted they were easy to use. We might be using command lines on phones to this day. Jobs saved us from a lot of drudgery and frustration and showed us what the path should be.
The other thing for which I'm grateful... and this is personal... he proved that the bullshit notion of hippies being lazy was bullshit. The hippies created much of the tech industry, while the martini drinkers in Detroit were busy losing half of the auto industry.
*the other organization that comes to mind are the Grateful Dead. For decades they were the largest grossing music act in the world. Unknown to most people they spun of several successful businesses. Their sound man Agustus Stanley Owsley created Alembic Inc.
Business meetings of the Grateful Dead organization included everyone, including janitors etc. Many of the lower ranks moved up in the organization to become essential employees.
And for those who don't know, rather than suppress music trading, the Dead not only allowed it, they sold special tickets for people that allowed them to tape shows. Anyone can download virtually every show they performed going back to 1970, before that some are missing. |
