Certainly, the long-run objective for Hamas is to destroy Israel. But in the near term, it will suffice to stir up the emotions of those around the world about the purported "asymmetry" of it all. There could be nothing more asymmetrical, after all, than poor Hamas firing hundreds or thousands of rockets at civilian populations but having little effect; while the evil Jews kill Palestinian children.

To Hamas, the children are expendable, and in fact, to Palestinian children they are themselves expendable, because of the constant manipulations of their minds for their entire existence. If a few Palestinian kids lose their lives in exchange for a lowering of Israeli esteem in the eyes of the world, the immediate objective is accomplished. The protestors in Europe, the outrage among those Americans who are easily persuaded, you can't measure the value of it to the cause of Hamas. After all, the lives lost are mere Palestinians in their eyes.
