That data dispels your perception that competitors to the iPhone in the high end segment have had recent success...
Huh? Where did I suggest that competing premium priced phones are having success? My general belief is that sales of all premium priced phones will continue to underperform the broader market growth, and my particular concern is that if the iPhone 6 extends that premium, it will exacerbate the situation.

He has no data that supports his android hardware centric view of the future.
Let's try to be a bit more accurate and not put words in my mouth. First, Android isn't hardware. Second, my point in the recent discussion had nothing to do with Android; it had to do with the impact of rising costs on premiums and how that might impact consumer demand (in particular, but not limited to, upcoming iPhones).
Only android smartphones are a fungible commodity. Without differentiation, hardware manufacturers of smartphones using android are pinned down with the price elasticity of their undifferentiated products.
All phones compete against each other to varying degrees. While a Samsung S5 user is more likley to switch to an iPhone 6 or another premium priced phone and consumer using an entry-level phone is more likely to stick with something similarly priced, no phone is completely isolated from competition. Within the subset of phones running a specific OS, there is substantial differentiation.
