Yeah dumps have always had to vent garbage piles or they risk them exploding. Hopefully by now all of them have gotten smart and instead of just venting the gases they capture and use them. The gas from my local dump dump goes to heat green houses and to run a Rolls-Royce engine manufacturing plant. Interesting facts about my dump...20% by weight of garbage turns into gas, makes the energy equivalent of about 138k barrels of oil per year.
