The desktop is great, but MSFT understands that the enterprise is where the real money is. hence, NT 5.0 and ActiveDirectory services. IBM is one of the leading providers of Enterprise Servers and solutions. They have some of the best, fastest, and most scalable internet servers available. MSFT is not a credible enterprise player.

How many SCP's are running NT? Zilch my friend. How many mission critical transaction servers (i.e. financial) are running NT? I am an NT application developer. I have been writing NT software for 4 years. NT is the best low-end, desktop OS available. As an enterprise platform, it stinks.
Internet Exlporer 1.0 was GARBAGE compared to Navigator, but when you have the best and the brightest you will always win,(actually let me clarify, I still think IBM has some of the best people in the WORLD!) when you USE the best and the brightest that is when you have won, let me give you an example friend public knowledge so I can tell you this one, IBM had this particalur scientist that worked for them, he knew one day that X-ray technology would be needed for wafer fabrication, IBM said nah, that is way too far off, he left IBM and went to Toshiba, guess who IBM liscenses their X-ray technology from now? More good AMERICAN technology gone away(grin) Bill Gates does not have ALL the BEST people in the world, just some of them, but IBM upper management hasn't got a clue, Gerstner still thinks like the old school and whatever gains he can make (he has done well) Billy boy will do better, that is why you develop for NT and not for Amiga or Atari or Apple or Sun or etc etc etc, BILL GATES KNOWS how to USE what he has got, NO ONE ELSE CAN COMPETE, one day he will meet his match, but that day is not here yet, NT will Take over, example, the US AIR FORCE used to use NOVELL and UNIX for EVERYTHING, guess what mission directive number one is for 98, that's right NT, My state governement in GA used to use Novell and SUN, now guess what the colleges and other organization will be switching too, thats RIGHT NT, A local software company Goldleaf Technologies (which is HUGE in the small banking sector - IE FINANCE like you said ) used to use OS2, guess what they are switching too, HEHEH! THATS RIGHT, YOU WIN THE PRIZE WINDOWS NT, IT IS TAKING OVER LIKE THE PLAGUE AND NO AMOUNT OF UNSUBSTANTIATED NONSENSE can stop it. In 94 Gateway 2000 got very scared with something that still may come to pass, Intel basically oemed the whole BOX save for the cd-rom and hard drive to many of these mail order places, they started their intel inside campaign to get the public aware of INTEL, they had plans to cut out the middle guys like gateway and dell that built the public demand for the systems and GO DIRECT to the public, IBM was aware of this and started getting in bed with cyrix for a supply of chips, Bill Gates knew this too, he KNEW what power that would be to INTEL, NT was suddenly being ported to power pc and alpha architectures, he was NOT going to let GROVE have ANY POWER over his software, Micorosft as well as others were getting into bed with AMD and Cyrix to break Groves hold on the chips, but they public doesn't care what is ON THE INSIDE, they care about the INTERFACE the use and the SOFTWARE that is available for it.
Wether NT is GARBAGE now or not does not matter, when all the cards finally fall, IT WILL BE THE BEST!
No, they are inthe enterprise solutions market. Have you checked out IBM's services revenues. And, the mainframe has been recast as a data server. IBM's mainframe business which was supposed to be dead, is now one of the most scalable internet information servers available.

Bill Gates will OWN the internet, Bill Gates will OWN the finance industry, BIll Gates will OWN the Satellite Communication industry (with teledesic), he will control so much power you cannot even comprehend where he will have his hands into, he is jumping into the embedded systems market, a 6 billion dallar a year industry, windows CE can't compete NOW, but time is on Billys side, he got a slap on the wrist from the govt for what he did, they don't want to stop him they did that to appease the public, they KNOW he is not STUPID, he WILL NOT give away AMERICAN technology to FORIEGN competition like IBM did.
He will be what carries our NATION into the GLOBAL competing MARKET, give him 10 years and you will BE AMAZED! Oh the things I could tell you, another example, do you realize at many accredited CS programs accross our nation he is pushing MICROSOFT CERTIFIED textbooks on the instructors to teach their classes, giving them WINDOWS software to learn, he is training his NEW BLOOD for world dominance, we NEED that kind of power as a NATION if we want to remain NUMBER ONE in the world economy, we are losing our production and technology left and right to foreign competitors, they have child labor and lax industrial laws,
where is your tv made, your vcr, that plastic bowl, the parts of your car, those clothes, those sneakers, where are they made?
