Take a look at the 10Q for Ampex for both the 1st and 2nd quarter 1996. In the section
on Keepered media, Ampex reported that one of the disk drive manufacturers had signed a non
disclosure agreement to test keepered media with MR heads. My guess is
this was IBM. The research indicates that keepered should improve the performance
of MR as well and therefore that is a market open to Ampex, if it should become
wider and deeper as expected. However, the significance of the testing
with tripad heads and inductive heads is that the performance, particularly
of the tripad heads, is raised to at or above MR heads with keepered media.
