Derrick means ASEAN, as in Association of South East Asian Nations, a cozy club of 8 (or is it 9?) nations in--no prizes for guessing--South East Asia.

Of all the Asean nations, Singapore is perceived to be the most solid vis-a-vis fundamentals: huge foreign reserves (3rd or 4th largest in the world, I think), a highly educated, English-speaking workforce, superb infrastructure and a no-nonsense (virtually zero tolerance) government. It therefore follows that Singapore has been least affected by the Asian crisis, but it has nevertheless been rocked. In the event of a recovery, I think Singapore will be at the forefront.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Singapore-phile, but facts are facts ;-)
