Not change the guard unless there was something +ve...

Does'nt that hold equally true for something -ve ?

Shiva on it's own will have no great future, just a sign
of times. RBOCs etc. are looking for end to end provider.
Cuts down on all the finger pointing when things go wrong
and brings together faster deployment of new technologies.
(well at least that's the perception...)

And far from what an everyday joe might think, more things
go wrong than in the telco network today than in a Bond movie.

Let's see when was it that Shiva had announced a high
density RAS product ? oh I see they don't have one.

One can forget about all the Lanrover products - they are
not going to make jack for revenues, just the small number
of corporate customers.

While all the big ISP's are shopping at Ascend. Shiva can
continue there corporate assault which will keep there
stock in the $10-$15 range or, they can jump in with
Nortel and start planning the next generation switch which
can handle ISDN, xDSL etc. and try to leapfrog the
competition.

After all, what we have seen so far is really the
1st Chapter in the Internet book, soon we will
have frequent evolutions similar to the processor
and OS evolutions (Win 3.x and Intel 486 seem like
bad nightmares nowadays and they were very popular
3 years back) in the networking world, specially in
the consumer access side.
