Mohammed spent years teaching peace and tolerance as a prophet and gained a whopping 150 followers. His own tribal clan in Mecca persecuted his movement and at one point he sent his own family and most of his followers to Ethiopia where they were sheltered by a Christian king. Then Mohammed moved to Medina and abandoned his previous teachings to teach a new message of warfare, raiding, rape, and theft. That criminal cult took off and the rest is history.
