Which I think actually happened. A Jewish female slave was blamed for his death by poisoning, but Aisha and her father benefited since Abu Bakr took over as caliph immediately after Mohammed's death. While his favorite cousin and son-in-law, Ali, was in mourning for Mohammed (washing his body for burial actually), Bakr was hurridly "elected" the next caliph by a small group of followers.
